SUPPORTING INNOVATION
Art museums are facing many challenges and cannot succeed by relying solely on the practices of the past. Visitation (on average) remains below pre-2020 levels; large-scale federal relief programs have ended (and most funds have been spent); and expenses continue to rise, driven by inflation and the desire (and pressure) to increase staff compensation.
As a result, museums need more solutions of all kinds: more support for innovative ideas; more tools to inform better business practices; and more opportunities to work through all of these challenges (and possible solutions) with peers. Remuseum seeks to offer all of those forms of support, by celebrating champions of innovation, by offering resources and tools to help museums manage their resources better and thrive, and by connecting leaders who can share and support each other.
Permanent collections represent the most important resource of most art museums, and there are many reasons to continue adding to them. But the constant growth of collections that are expensively stored (and rarely seen) also represent a rising cost, both to the museum and to the public.
“More Art for More People in More Places” documents the growth (and growing cost) of museum collections and then shares case studies from more than a dozen American museums that are thinking differently about how to acquire, own, share, and care for art in a way that serves both the public and the museum.
Case Studies IN Innovation: AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT
American art museums are driven by a passion to serve and engage the public with art, and for most of them that means increasing the number and range of visitors they attract. For a number of reasons, the drive to expand access and to attract broader audiences faces several obstacles, including a lack of both data and sustained examples of how best to do this work.
“Case Studies in Innovation” is a series of reports on the topics of Access, Audience Development, and Marketing – sharing best practices and examples of how museums could attract the largest audiences possible, and how to do so sustainably and true to their missions.
“Audience Development” is the second report in the series. Available now.
